July is UV Safety Month! Exposure to the sun during daily activities and play causes the most sun damage. Overexposure to sunlight before age 18 is most damaging to the skin. UV rays are strongest during summer months when the sun is directly overhead—normally from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends you follow the A, B, C’s to prevent sunburn:
Away – stay away from the sun in the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are most damaging.
Block – block the sun’s rays using an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen and apply 30 minutes before going outside and reapply often during the day.
Cover up – cover up with protective clothing such as a long sleeve shirt, hat and sunglasses when in the sun.
